Ok, I know this is a little late, but I had to comment on last week.
This year for Thanksgiving we hosted it at our house with Mike's family. There was about ten people all together. Here is how the days before the big event worked out:
- The Saturday before Thanksgiving we made our shopping list and went out to buy everything for the dinner that did not need to be fresh.
- Monday work 7am-6pm and then go to Wall-Mart for additional items that can't be bought at WINCO.
- Tuesday work 7am-6pm and then go back to WINCO and buy fresh ingredients. Make rolls and brine for turkey.
- Wednesday work 7am-4:30 and then go to mom's house to make pies, 3 pumpkin, a chocolate cream, and a marionberry. Mike at home cooked the yams, made the green bean casserole, bread stuffing and started soaking the turkey.
- Thanksgiving Thursday prepare items that could not be made in advance and cook all dishes and enjoy.
This year we decided to try some new dishes and some old favorites. It was also only the second time we have cooked a turkey and tried it a new way. The turkey came out very moist and Mike said it fell off the bone as he was cutting it. Everyone enjoyed everything that was cooked and we have enjoyed the leftovers. Here is a list of what we made (nothing from a box):
- Turkey oven baked- we used Alton Brown's recipe on the Food Network website
- Turkey Loaf deep fried
- Bread stuffing
- Cornbread stuffing
- Green beans and Kale
- Cooked Yams in a Carmel sauce
- Green bean casserole
- Mashed potatoes and gravy
- Homemade Rolls
- Cranberry sauce (From Grandma)
- Raspberry Jello (From Megan)
- Pies - Pumpkin, Chocolate Cream, Marionberry, Apple (From Mike's Mom) and Pecan (From Grandma)
After dinner some people watched the game while others played the Wii. The weekend was a lot of fun and I enjoyed being able to hold my new nephew Christopher and being around all the family.
